Icy Kaimai warning

Major speed reductions are recommended today on Highway 36 over Pyes Pa and Highway 29 over the Kaimai Ranges, due to icy conditions.

“I’m talking about a major reduction in speed,” says Traffic sergeant Mark Holmes.
“If there are any giveaway signs on the side of the road, then I’m talking dropping down to 60-70 kmh. Some people think a reduction is speed in 10 kmh. It needs to be substantial,” says Mark.
“So what if it takes another ten minutes, at least you get there, and your car’s not wrecked.”
Road contractors are putting grit on the road, says Mark, to attempt to cope with black ice that was forming again at the top of the hill this morning.
“It is just on dawn when the black ice is forming, in between the tar seal  on the road,” says Mark. “Just take a bit of care.”
A lane was closed for a while yesterday to prevent traffic sliding across the centre line.
